About this Opportunity

The Projects Sourcing and Procurement team, which is part of the Supply Chain Management (SCM) team, provides end to end sourcing and procurement for Cenovus Facility Engineering, Construction and Earthworks capital project teams with an estimated annual portfolio of $500 MM.

Cenovus Energy is looking to fill the position of SCM Group Lead, Projects Sourcing and Procurement. Reporting to the Manager, Projects Sourcing and Procurement this position is responsible for applying standard processes for sourcing, qualifying and managing suppliers used in Project execution throughout the end-to-end life cycle.

This position will drive the development and execution of Sourcing Strategies, contracting and procurement plans, and other commercial initiatives focused on reducing total cost of ownership in close collaboration with internal business stakeholders and suppliers. The position will also play a leadership role within the Projects sourcing team.

The ideal candidate possesses progressive experience with all aspects of Project sourcing including Engineering, Fabrication, Construction with execution of EPC Models, different contracting models, external sourcing (EPC Firms) and low-cost sourcing abroad. Experience in the energy sector is an asset but other qualifications could include strong project sourcing for other similar large process or manufacturing facilities (such as chemical plants or refineries) in market segments where supply-chain is a strategic value driver to the enterprise financial results and work as an equal partner with project capital execution teams. The candidate must demonstrate a strong track record, evidenced by quantitative achievements, in implementing project sourcing, contracting and contract administration.



Work Environment

This is a full time employee position working in our Calgary office.




  • Drive cost leadership and project sourcing excellence cross-functionally to maximize synergies across Well Delivery and other categories
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to identify and drive implementation of metrics, tools, and processes to optimize sourcing activities and efficiencies
  • Build, develop and execute a strategy, structure, governance, sourcing plan and procurement process for services and materials within assigned portfolio
  • Lead implementation of Project sourcing strategies for respective portfolio in alignment with with overall Projects objectives for Safety, Cost, Schedule and Quality.
  • Perform market analysis for Project portfolios and develop price evolution forecasts in support of Capital Projects cost evolution
  • Functionally lead and execute the end-to-end supply-chain for all external goods and services in support of Projects including procurement, materials planning, logistics, storage, and contract management
  • Deliver external cost evolution performance monthly to Project Sourcing and Functional leadership
  • Manage and enhance processes for the interactions with internal and external stakeholders, including supply planning, contract implementation and compliance, business requirements and conflict resolution
  • Lead sourcing, contracting, procurement and vendor management Cenovus-wide for assigned portfolio
  • Achieve year-over-year cost reduction targets on external goods and schedule for the portfolio and in support of project objectives
  • Develop and deploy, in conjunction with Projects execution teams, the right contracting strategy to meet execution plans while maximizing Cenovus sustainable competitive advantage in cost, cash and operational performance
  • Design and lead multi-level complex negotiations strategies with key vendors
  • Achieve improved vendor safety performance targets by integrating Cenovus' Safety Commitments, strong vendor qualification and performance feedback into the sourcing processes
  • Ensure Vendors goods and services meet Projects objectives of safety, cost, schedule and quality as wells as strive for strong innovation, customer support and warranty
  • Optimize supplier performance with regular interaction to minimize transaction costs, ensure compliance to negotiated contracts, minimize the cost leakage and maximize supplier synergies
  • Directly lead a small team of sourcing and category management supply-chain professionals, from Senior Advisors to Analysts




  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • 10-15 years of progressive strategic sourcing and procurement experience within assigned portfolio

  • Academic Degree in Business Administration or equivalent. Alternatively an Engineering Degree combined with strong project sourcing experience or MBA would be considered

  • Progressive experience with all aspects of Project sourcing including Engineering, fabrication, construction with execution of EPC models, different contracting models,external sourcing (EPC firms) and low-cost sourcing abroad

  • Extensive sourcing for large project execution of energy industry or similar process or manufacturing facilities

  • Ability to lead complex negotiations. Previous responsibility for negotiations and supplier management through the development phase

  • Previous experience initiating and executing strategic sourcing processes

  • Previous experience leading teams and managing individual and team performance

  • Ability to negotiate skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups

  • Sourcing expertise with planning, assessing and implementing outsourcing and multi-sourcing delivery models

  • Strategic thinker but focused on delivery

  • Strong analytical skills. Able to solve problems through honest analysis coupled with good judgment; initiative and decision making abilities

  • Excellent presentation skills. Able to speak and write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and with different levels of stakeholders
  • Knowledgeable in current and possible future policies, practices, trends, technology and information affecting his/her business and organization

  • Experience in business segment where Supply-chain management is mature is a strong asset
