    About this Opportunity

    Reporting to the Director, Commercial Development, the Senior Specialist, Commercial Development is accountable for identifying, evaluating and executing opportunities that enable operational performance or drive commercial value. This position is also responsible for economic analysis, negotiating contracts related to crude, natural gas, diluent and NGL on all modes of transportation.

    The Senior Specialist, Commercial Development partners with leaders in Trading, Logistics and Upstream Operations, to recommend commercial proposals related to existing and new commercial assets, ensuring that opportunities align with business plans and corporate strategies.

    The scope includes assisting in the development and implementation of the Commercial strategy.

    The position will be accountable for providing day to day leadership and management of 2-3 commercial staff members.

    Work Environment

    This is a full time employee position working in our Calgary office. Candidate must be able to travel to the US and internationally.


    • Originate and execute on opportunities that add commercial value
    • Provide in-depth knowledge and commercial advice related to transportation and storage contracts
    • Manage crude, diluent, natural gas and NGL transportation and storage contracts across diverse geographical regions
    • Commercial negotiations, contract management and project management
    • Create financial models and economic justification for recommendations
    • External senior point of contact with Pipelines, terminals and other founding shippers on commercial matters
    • Partner closely with Commercial Operations and Trading to optimize new and existing contracts, ensuring Cenovus is obtaining optimal value from our marketing activities while reducing risk
    • Contributes to the development of Downstream and functional area strategy and interprets into key initiatives
    • Identify emerging issues affecting Cenovus’s strategic plans

    Internal Stakeholders:

    • Reports to Director, Commercial Development
    • Interacts daily with Commercial Leadership Team to ensure optimization of asset base
    • Interfaces with key functional enablers such as Customs, Finance, Legal, Risk, and Regulatory
    • Builds and maintains strong relationships with key senior external stakeholders in business/commercial development roles from pipeline, terminals, midstream, and rail companies

    • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
    • 15+ years of relevant experience combined with formal education in Business, Economics, Engineering or related discipline
    • Extensive commercial experience in Crude/Diluent with Trading or Logistics experience preferred
    • Experience in crude, diluent and product blending
    • Commercial and operational understanding of all crude-by-rail aspects
    • Thorough understanding of rail, crude, diluent and NGL infrastructure throughout Canada and the US
    • Understanding of pipeline and terminal tariffs and regulations
    • Strong understanding of commercial value drivers and ability to leverage these in commercial arrangements
    • Established relationships with industry and key 3rd party terminals and pipelines
    • Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills
    • Strong understanding of contract language, tariffs and regulations; ability to create and translate into optimization opportunities
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an inclusive environment with multiple internal and external stakeholders
    • Previous experience managing and developing high-performing teams and effectively lead change
